Leh and Ladakh are comparable to none other, incomparable beauties really. The land is chequered with extremities, geographical and cultural. Leh and Ladakh are complementary to each other and the experience is incomplete if not visited together.
|
Geographically, this place is fenced by two of the world's highest mountain ranges- the
Mighty Himalayas and the Karakoram Range. Two others, the Ladakh range and the Zanskar range, lie across each other. In geological terms, Leh and Ladakh, this entire area is still in its youthful years, formed only about a few million years back.
The geography of Leh and Ladakh makes for an interesting study. The Himalayas are the youngest fold mountains and they are continuously growing, as the Indian subcontinent keeps pushing unrelentingly upwards, towards the huge landmass of Asia. The region of Leh and Ladakh was formed by similar tectonic thrusts of the subcontinent towards the continental interior. The land got patterned into folds and troughs, and after millons of years of widespread erosion, it has come to look like the land we see today.
